Beauty parlours require the beauticians to seem “beautiful”. Job applications don’t have an “acid victim” category. And, unlike popular perception, acid attack survivors cannot get employment under the “disabled” vacancy. Chhapaak begins with Malti’s search for employment as an acid attack survivor. She is indifferent to the rude stares and familiar with rejections.
We soon learn of the attack that started it all. Malti rolls on the bottom and screams in pain after the acid is thrown at her — erasing her face and agency. Arijit Singh’s voice with Gulzar’s lyrics elevates the emotion. “Chhapaak se pehchaan le gaya”. The attack occurred years ago, but Malti still suffers from it, every second.
Deepika Padukone as Malti is instantly believable form the primary scene. The prosthetics don’t limit her ability to emote. At Malti’s new job at an NGO for acid attack survivors and victims, Deepika shows Malti’s subdued pain with forlorn silences. She acts together with her eyes. After Malti’s attack, Deepika shows Malti’s incredible pain and horror. She screams from her heart… reaching bent yours. When Malti finds love and happiness, Deepika smiles together with her body — her shoulders, cheeks and eyes move animatedly… bringing a smile to your face.

Vikrant Massey as Deepika’s angsty boss is simply nearly as good . he's relatable, likable and incredibly adorable. The supporting cast — Malti’s family, lawyers, journalists are all on point. Their relationships with Malti are all smartly woven during this vast, non-linear but balanced story.
Director and writer Meghna Gulzar successfully adapts her style to suit the dramatic, legal, romantic and empowering narrative. The approach is usually respectful, never exploitative.
The story and therefore the subject themselves deliver the messaging. Gulzar with Co-writer Atika Chohan tap into the corrosive patriarchy behind men’s got to control women.
While a few of crucial parts won't register the specified effect thanks to multiple reasons i'm still trying to spot , it's hard to not get emotionally attached to the film. I walked out wondering why a criminal offense like this could even exist within the first place. How can a person buy a 30 rupees bottle and alter her life forever? during a splash?
